My Compaq-BIOS computer won't boot off the HD! (or: won't boot off floppy or CDROM) What can I do?

Well, you can clear the BIOS without taking apart the computer. Oddly, the detection routines of the BIOS when its empty are better than when it's already configured. With the unit off, hold down the Fn key and turn the unit on. Keep holding the Fn key and start tapping the F11 key. After the unit reboots, you can stop and release the Fn key. You should see a message that says,

162 - Option Not Set

and you have successfully clear the CMOS. (Just remember this clears all settings, including the clock's time.)
