I got a Word document that instead of math symbols in equations are replaced with squares...

This may be because whomever wrote the document used MathType, which of course makes use of MathType fonts. So you need to install them. Get 'em from: http://www.dessci.com/en/dl/fonts/ (I also have a local copy, not avaiable online)
